5 plus 1 tips to help your baby sleep through the night
Is your baby struggling to sleep through the night?
Here are a few tips that can help the whole family enjoy a long, peaceful night.
1. Create a predictable evening routine
Predictability is incredibly important for babies and toddlers. A consistent bedtime routine helps them understand what is coming next, which makes it easier to drift off.
A sample evening routine:
-
18:30 – Brush teeth and bath
-
18:40 – Pyjamas and sleeping bag
-
18:50 – Breastfeed or formula
-
19:00 – Bedtime story
-
19:30 – Lights out
2. Earlier bedtimes work best for your child
For babies, an ideal bedtime is between 6 pm and 8 pm. Going down early helps them sleep 11–13 hours at a stretch. Good night-time sleep is key for all children up to around age 10.
3. Put your child down awake

If you have been rocking or cuddling to sleep, placing them in the cot awake can feel hard at first, yet it is one of the most important steps. Children are more likely to sleep through when they can settle without help.
With little ones who can walk or talk, expect a few early “excuses”: thirsty, hungry, needs the loo, scared, too dark… Put a small beaker of water in the room and take a loo trip before bed, although it may not stop the attempts.
If they are scared, reassure them. Tell them the walls are strong, the door is closed, and Mum and Dad are keeping them safe. Feeling safe matters. If they wake in the night feeling worried, let them know they only need to call and you will be there.
4. If baby wakes in the night, wait a few minutes before going in
Everyone, whatever their age, startles briefly between sleep cycles. Most babies cry because they have not yet learnt to resettle. With a little practice, they can learn to soothe themselves back to sleep.
5. Comfort is everything
Deep sleep needs a comfortable environment: a supportive cot, soft pyjamas and the right sleep set up. A soft bamboo sleeping bag and sleepsuit are a great choice, especially for sensitive skin. Thanks to its premium composition, it is ideal for little ones with delicate skin. Since bamboo regulates temperature well, it is perfect for night-time too.

+1 Room temperature and pyjama thickness
If the room is too warm or too cool, your baby can wake more easily. Experiment to find the best temperature and the right number of layers. In warmer weather you can even leave the window slightly ajar.
You will also need to find how many layers your child sleeps well in while staying comfortably warm.

An illness, teething, travel, a growth spurt - even a small change - can easily disrupt your baby’s sleep. They may sleep well for six months, then need a new approach. The principles stay the same, but the most important thing is to find what works best for you.

If you are in the middle of toilet training, you may need to get up once or twice at night. This can make sleep harder at first, even if your child previously slept through.
