Born in February, how should you dress your baby?
The final month of winter can still bring plenty of chilly surprises. In the UK at this time of year, the temperature can vary a great deal: in some areas, average temperatures may sit below freezing, while elsewhere milder weather of around 1–2 °C is possible. Over the course of the month, you may see bitterly cold days below -15 °C as well as spring-like, sunny daytime temperatures above 15 °C, so rather than relying on predictability, it is worth preparing for flexibility.
A newborn’s body is not yet able to regulate temperature properly, which makes babies much more sensitive to cold and temperature changes. Dressing your baby well is not only about comfort, it is also about safety. In this article, we’ll guide you through how to build a practical winter wardrobe for your February baby.

According to LiaaBébé’s recommendation:
-
for sleep: bodysuit with sleepsuit and a 0.5 TOG sleeping bag, at 25 °C the sleepsuit may not be necessary
-
during the day: the outfit used for sleep is suitable
-
outdoors: at around 5 °C, a footmuff over a bodysuit and sleepsuit is ideal, while in milder weather a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag will be perfect instead of a footmuff
In colder weather, choose a thicker footmuff and always keep that good old piece of advice in mind: dress your baby in one more layer, than you would comfortably wear at the same temperature.
Dress your February baby in layers
In February, layering is not just a practical solution, it is almost essential. As there are plenty of frosty days during the month, and temperatures below -5 °C can often occur, it is important that your baby is always properly protected.

At home and for sleep, a bodysuit and a comfortable sleepsuit are usually enough, with a warmer sleeping bag added depending on the room temperature. Outdoors, however, your baby will need more protection: a warm pramsuit or footmuff helps prevent their body from getting cold, even during a longer walk.
The most important thing is to choose pieces that are easy to take off or put on, so you can adjust your baby’s outfit to the current weather. Layering is easy to vary. It is also worth taking an extra baby blanket with you on every walk.
What room temperature is ideal for a newborn?
According to professional recommendations, a room temperature between 22–25 °C is ideal for newborns. In winter, however, it can be easy to go too far and overheat the home.
A room that is too warm can be just as hard on a baby as the cold, so it is worth making sure the temperature stays even. If the room climate is stable, it can also have a positive effect on sleep quality.
What should your baby wear at home?
In a room with a steady temperature, too many layers are not needed. A bodysuit and sleepsuit combination is usually a perfect choice, topped with a well-chosen 0.5–1.5 TOG sleeping bag. After a bath, you can put a thin little hat on your baby’s head.
The most important factor is not necessarily thickness, but the quality of the fabric. It is worth choosing clothes that are soft, breathable and stretchy enough for easy dressing.

What should your newborn wear during the day?
Daytime clothing is often the same as night-time clothing, as at this age babies are not yet moving actively. Because they do not generate enough body heat, it is important that they are always dressed a little more warmly than an adult.
How should you dress your baby for the weather outside?
During February walks, the biggest challenge is the cold air and wind. In the morning, temperatures are often below freezing, while during the day they are generally around 0–5 °C.
The main thing to watch is that your baby’s body stays evenly warm. Over a long-sleeved bodysuit and sleepsuit, add a thicker layer or footmuff, depending on the temperature outside. A winter hat, socks and blanket are also important accessories. If it feels right, you can cover the footmuff with an extra blanket too.

A footmuff for the pram is very useful throughout winter, as it blocks wind and cold air and keeps warmth around your baby’s little feet, so it is a good accessory to use during walks.
Why is bamboo baby clothing an excellent choice?
Choosing the right fabric for baby clothes is at least as important as layering, and bamboo will be an excellent choice for you and your baby.
One of the biggest advantages of bamboo fabric is its natural temperature-regulating ability. This means it helps keep your baby warm in the cold, while not allowing them to overheat when they move into a warmer environment. It warms in winter and cools in summer. This is especially useful in February, when cold outdoor air and warm indoor spaces often alternate.
It is also exceptionally soft to the touch, making it gentle on a newborn’s sensitive skin. It is breathable and effectively wicks away moisture, helping to prevent skin irritation and common rashes. Many parents also find that bamboo clothes keep their shape and comfort for longer, making them a practical choice for everyday life.
It is also worth mentioning the stretchiness of LiaaBébé baby clothes as it is truly outstanding. This is something you love because it makes dressing your baby so much easier. When you do not have to squeeze your child’s hands and feet into tight clothing, but can gently pull the garment around their body instead, those everyday moments become more comfortable and more connected for both of you.

Your questions for us
How can you check whether your baby is dressed properly?
The easiest method is to touch the back of their neck or their chest. If they feel naturally warm, you have chosen well. If their skin is sweaty or damp, they are wearing too much. If they feel cool, or their skin looks mottled, it is worth adding one more layer.
Why is using a sleeping bag recommended?
A sleeping bag provides even warmth, does not slip off and creates a safer sleeping environment for your baby. The TOG rating also helps you choose the right thickness more easily for the temperature. LiaaBébé sleeping bags are safe thanks to their cut: they gently fit around the neck and arm openings, so they do not ride up or slip down.
Can you take a newborn baby outside in sub-zero temperatures, wind or fog?
According to the recommendation, it is better to keep the smallest babies mainly indoors until they are 3 months old, and the first few weeks are certainly not the time to get them used to frosty winter cold. If going outside is necessary, keep it as brief as possible. How a parent handles cold weather with their baby is usually an individual decision and can also depend on personal and national habits.
The key to dressing babies born in February is adaptability. Because the weather is cold and often extreme, layering, choosing the right fabric and paying close attention are especially important.
When you keep these in mind, your baby will stay comfortable and safe, whether they are resting at home or you are taking a walk together in the fresh winter air.
