What should you dress your baby in at night?

“How should I dress my baby at night?” It sounds simple, but every parent knows the decision needs care to avoid health risks.

They are so little, so what should you put on them? Should baby sleep in long sleeves or short sleeves? How do you choose the ideal sleepwear? Do you even need special sleepwear? Here is a quick guide to help you decide what to dress your baby in for the night.

As a new parent, even choosing pyjamas can feel daunting. A little reading goes a long way. Below are straightforward pointers to help you navigate the world of children’s sleepwear.

What are the ground rules?

You may have heard the rule of thumb that babies should wear one more layer than you. Usually, a two piece cotton pyjama set with a light cover is enough.

That is only the start. You also need to factor in room temperature. Ideally, the nursery sits around 20 to 22 °C. If the room is warmer or cooler, adjust your baby’s sleep layers accordingly.

Avoid overdressing. Previous generations often bundled babies up, but overheating is a real risk and is associated with SIDS. The risk is highest under 6 months, but it is still something to be mindful of with younger and older infants.

A thermostat or indoor thermometer helps you choose suitable pyjamas. Trust your instincts as well. If you feel comfortable, chances are your baby will too.

Should we swaddle?

Newborns often respond well to swaddling. A snug swaddle can help them feel safe, similar to the womb. Cotton and muslin are good choices, because both are light and have a little give, so they are easy to wrap. If swaddling is not for you, choose a sleepsuit and a sleeping bag instead.

Once your baby starts rolling, stop swaddling because it is no longer considered safe. On hot summer nights, a simple body or a breathable bamboo sleeping bag can be enough.

In colder seasons, prepare baby appropriately, but skip accessories like hats for sleep. Avoid any loose items that could slip down and cover airways during the night.

Function over fashion

In the early months you will probably change a nappy once or twice overnight. No one wants to fight fiddly fastenings at 3 a.m., so choose pieces with well placed poppers or zips to make changes quick and calm. That is better for you and your baby.

Always consider your baby’s age

Sleep needs and set ups change as your baby grows. What worked at three months may not work at six months or at one year.

For example, you may stop using traditional sleeping bags once baby can sit or pull to stand. This is not necessary if you choose a toddler sleeping bag with legs. This design is a great option for wriggly and on the move little ones. It helps keep an ideal temperature and prevents blankets from being kicked off.
