Born in January – how should you dress your baby?

January can be a little tricky when it comes to dressing a newborn. Although winters have felt milder in recent years, temperatures can still often hover around freezing, and at night they may drop well below it. In January, average temperatures in the UK can sit in the low single digits, but colder spells below 0 °C are possible, while daytime temperatures can occasionally feel surprisingly mild, reaching around 10–15 °C.

A newborn’s temperature regulation is still immature, which makes babies especially sensitive to these changes. The key to dressing them well is thoughtful layering and using high-quality, breathable fabrics. In this article, we’ll show you how to dress your January baby safely and comfortably – at home, for sleep, and for chilly winter walks too.

Dress your January baby in layers

According to LiaaBébé’s recommendation:

  • for sleep: a bodysuit, sleepsuit and 0.5 TOG sleeping bag, depending on the room temperature. At 25 °C, the sleepsuit may not be necessary

  • during the day: a similar outfit to sleepwear

  • outdoors: a bodysuit, sleepsuit and warm pramsuit or footmuff are suitable. On colder days, add a hat, socks and blanket. At around 5 °C, a bodysuit and sleepsuit with a footmuff over the top works well; in milder weather, a 2.5 TOG sleeping bag may be suitable instead of a footmuff

January weather can be unpredictable, so it’s especially important to choose layers that are easy to adjust. Always consider whether it is cold, whether there is a biting wind or fog, and on those days, avoid taking your little one outdoors.

What room temperature is ideal for a newborn?

According to professional guidance, 22–25 °C is ideal.

During the winter months, we often tend to overheat our homes, so it’s important to make sure your baby’s surroundings are not too warm. A stable, comfortable temperature and a properly breathable outfit help prevent both overheating and getting too cold. Newborns need a slightly warmer room because they cannot yet regulate their own body temperature properly.

What should your baby wear in a 22–25 °C room?

If the room temperature stays consistent overnight, LiaaBébé recommends a bodysuit and sleepsuit with a sleeping bag for your baby up to around 24 °C. At a room temperature of 25 °C, a bodysuit alone is usually enough under a sleeping bag or a light baby blanket.

What should you look for when choosing baby clothes?

The fabric should be soft and stretchy so dressing is easy and fuss-free. Temperature-regulating materials can be a real help in keeping your baby’s body from getting too cold or too warm.

Essential clothing for January babies

  • Long-sleeved bodysuits

  • Comfortable zip sleepsuits

  • Warmer 1.5–2.5 TOG sleeping bags

  • Warm baby blanket

  • Hats — a thinner one for indoors, a warmer one for outside

  • Socks and mittens for cold days

  • Footed trousers

  • Soft jumper

These essentials help you feel prepared for every situation in those first few weeks. If you’re heading out for a walk, it’s worth taking an extra blanket, and something to protect the pram from the wind, because you never quite know what winter weather has in store.

It is not recommended to take a newborn out in sub-zero temperatures, but if you absolutely have to, keep it very brief.

What should a newborn wear during the day?

During the day, a newborn’s outfit is very similar to what they would wear at night. As they are not yet moving actively and do not generate enough body heat, they usually need one more layer than an adult. Until around 6 weeks of age, they are still not able to compensate properly for environmental factors that affect their body temperature.

Important rule: they should always wear one more layer than you.

How should you dress your baby for the weather outside?

January weather in the UK can be changeable, but it is generally cold: mornings are often around freezing or below, while daytime temperatures are usually around 0–5 °C, occasionally rising above 10 °C.

Cold weather, from below 0 °C to around -5 °C:

  • bodysuit, sleepsuit and a thick pramsuit or footmuff

  • warm hat, socks and blanket

Sunny, milder days, around 5–10 °C:

  • bodysuit, sleepsuit and one lighter outer layer

  • watch how your baby feels and remove a layer if needed

Always dress your baby for the actual temperature, not just the date on the calendar.

Why is bamboo fibre the best choice?

Bamboo fabric is a particularly good choice in winter too, because it is:

  • temperature-regulating: it keeps your baby warm without letting them overheat

  • breathable

  • highly absorbent

  • gentle on sensitive baby skin

If we look at the benefits of bamboo from a temperature point of view, the most important feature is its temperature-regulating ability. In winter, it helps keep your little one warm so they do not get cold, while in summer it feels cooling and helps protect them from overheating. It absorbs moisture very well and is highly breathable, so your baby’s skin is less likely to become damp or clammy and can stay dry. This can help avoid rashes and chafing.

Thank you for your feedback

We love reading your experiences, because they help other parents make the right choices too.

Based on your feedback, baby clothes made from stretchy, natural materials are not only more comfortable but can also be used for longer. Choosing the right TOG rating also helps provide calmer sleep for both baby and the whole family.

Your questions for us

How do I know if my baby is cold or too warm?
Touch the back of their neck or their chest. If they feel warm and sweaty, they are overdressed. If they feel cool, they may be cold. Mottled-looking skin can also be a sign that your little one is cold.

Why is a sleeping bag useful?
It provides gentle, consistent warmth and does not slip off your baby. Your baby feels safe in it because it softly surrounds their body. It supports peaceful sleep not only for your baby, but for the parents too.

What does TOG mean?
TOG is a unit of measurement that indicates the thickness and warmth of a fabric. It shows how well baby clothing keeps your child’s body warm. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the sleeping bag or baby blanket.

A little guide to help you choose:

  • 0.5 TOG 22–25 °C

  • 1.5 TOG 20–23 °C

  • 2.5 TOG 18–21 °C

Why does the fabric of baby clothing matter?

If we choose pieces that protect the baby from getting too cold or overheating, while also being comfortable and natural, we can help protect their skin.

Can baby clothes “grow” with the child?

Yes, LiaaBébé pieces quite literally keep up with your baby’s growth. They are so stretchy and shape-retaining that they can be worn for a long time, passed on, and become a favourite for the whole family. This means you can plan with fewer, better-quality pieces.

The key to dressing babies born in January is thoughtful layering, choosing the right TOG rating and using natural materials. Because the weather is often changeable and cold, flexibility and paying close attention to your baby are especially important.
