What clothes should you buy for a baby born in September?
September is a true in-between month: one day the temperature can still climb above 30°C, and the next the sun disappears and the weather turns cool and rainy. At first, it can feel tricky to work out what clothes to choose for a baby due in September, but honestly, it’s easier than it seems. The real key here is layering and choosing the right fabric, not necessarily buying lots and lots of clothes.
In this article, we’ll go through what your baby is likely to need in those first few weeks, at home, for sleep, and for walks outside. We’ll show you which pieces can help you prepare for the suddenly changing weather of the first autumn month.
In September, and throughout the cooler months, layering your baby’s clothing is the most practical approach. Daytime average temperatures are usually around 17 to 20°C, but during half the month you can still get proper summer days, and even heatwave days now and then.

Layers for every possibility
-
For sleep: in a 22 to 24°C room, a short-sleeved bodysuit and a lightweight sleepsuit, with a 0.5 TOG sleep bag if needed; above 25°C, the sleepsuit can be left off
-
During the day: the same layered outfit is ideal
-
For outside: on a sunny 25 to 30°C day, a short-sleeved or long-sleeved bodysuit with little trousers is enough, or your baby can be covered with a muslin; on cooler mornings around 17 to 18°C, we recommend a lightweight long-sleeved bodysuit and a sleepsuit with a 2.5 TOG sleep bag
You’ll make life easier for yourself if you always have one easy-to-remove layer and an extra baby blanket with you, because September weather can be very unpredictable.
What should you dress your baby in for a 20°C room?
Professional guidance says that for newborn babies, a room temperature of 22 to 25°C is ideal, because they are not yet able to regulate their own body temperature properly. A room temperature in this range is safe for them, helping you avoid them becoming too cold or too warm.
If your home is cooler than that, and the temperature is around 20°C, then dress your newborn in:
-
a short-sleeved or long-sleeved bodysuit and
-
a lightweight sleepsuit, with a 1.5 or 2.5 TOG sleep bag, plus
-
a thin little hat, especially after bath time
Bamboo clothing helps balance temperature, so your little one won’t get sweaty, but won’t feel chilly either.

Basic pieces to make things easier
LiaaBébé recommends the following essentials, which will see you through beautifully:
-
short-sleeved and long-sleeved bodysuits, in colourful, cheerful prints
-
lightweight, easy-to-remove sleepsuits
-
a 0.5 TOG summer baby sleep bag, with 1.5 to 2.5 TOG for cooler nights when needed
-
a lightweight hat and socks for morning walks
-
a baby blanket that can be taken off quickly
-
footed baby trousers
Easy-to-mix, flexible pieces cover the full range of September weather.
When layering, the fabric of your baby’s clothes really matters
That’s because newborn babies are not yet able to regulate their body temperature properly, so changes in the temperature around them, whether that’s the air temperature or warmth trapped under clothing layers, can make them warm up or cool down very quickly. If they’re wearing clothing that doesn’t let their skin breathe, they can easily become too warm and sweaty.
You may notice this if you slide your hand under their clothing at the neck or back: their skin will feel warm and damp. If you do not spot it often enough, you may only notice the small heat rashes afterwards.
The biggest advantage of bamboo fabric is its temperature-regulating quality, helping to balance your child’s body heat as much as possible, even when the weather changes around them. It also breathes exceptionally well, and that constant airflow is gentle on your baby’s skin. So even if you dress your baby in layers in cooler weather, they’re less likely to get sweaty or overheat.
Outdoor weather in September, heat, cold and rain

At the beginning of autumn, the weather can be really changeable. When the outdoor temperature reaches 30 to 35°C, a short-sleeved bodysuit and lightweight footed trousers are enough, while the pram should be shaded from the sun.
You can also get cool, rainy days of 17 to 19°C. At those times, we recommend a long-sleeved bodysuit with a sleepsuit, a baby blanket, or a 2.5 TOG sleep bag. Evening and early morning temperatures can drop to around 10°C, so it’s always worth bringing an extra clothing layer, a thicker blanket, a hat and socks.
Autumn colours and prints
LiaaBébé baby clothes are made in beautifully vibrant colours and unique prints. Moving away from the world of white and beige, we bring a cheerful and stylish look even to the tiniest little wardrobes. We thought we’d show you a few lovely pieces whose shades fit beautifully into an autumn baby wardrobe.
The Big Beige Dots sleep bag, with light spots on a brown background, feels playful and stylish for both little girls and little boys. The Apricot long-sleeved bodysuit dresses your baby in the loveliest orange tone.

For baby girls, the frilled-sleeve bodysuits are especially sweet, whether in the Peach Maze print or plain Apricot. Among the bodysuits, you’ll also find the Banana Maze yellow patterned long-sleeved bodysuit.
Let’s choose a darker green too: the Dark Green long-sleeved bodysuit gives a wonderfully boyish look, while the lighter Jolly Green is lovely for girls as well. And if you’d prefer a more neutral, natural tone, go for the Almond sleepsuit.
Frequently asked questions about dressing babies in September
Why is a sleep bag useful?
Quite simply because your baby can sleep in complete safety: it won’t be kicked off during the night, it stays in place thanks to its proper neckline, and it’s soft, stretchy, warm and roomy.
Why is layering better?
Because it makes it much easier to regulate your baby’s body temperature, and in fact adults’ too. It’s practical as well, because it helps avoid having to head home just because the air has suddenly turned cooler.
What does the TOG rating mean?
TOG is a unit used to show the thickness of a fabric. It tells you how warmly a piece of baby clothing keeps your child. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the sleep bag or baby blanket.
A quick guide to help you choose:
-
0.5 TOG 22 to 25°C
-
1.5 TOG 20 to 23°C
-
2.5 TOG 18 to 21°C

What should you keep in mind in September?
In September, dressing your baby is mainly about layering, choosing the right TOG rating, and picking the right fabrics. And of course, how it all looks matters too. The weather can change quickly: warm, rainy, cold, but easy-to-combine bamboo pieces offer a practical solution in every situation.
