What Clothes Does a Baby Born in October Need?

When your baby arrives, you can already expect proper autumn weather . The days are cooler, and the nights can even be frosty. Imagine this: during the day, temperatures are often only around 9–11 °C, while in the early hours of the morning they can even drop below freezing.

A newborn’s temperature regulation is not yet fully developed, so it is especially important to choose clothes for your little one that keep them warm without causing overheating. This is often not quite as simple as it sounds, and it depends a great deal on the material of the baby clothes.

In this article, we will show you what clothes you will need at home, for sleep and for walks, and also which pieces LiaaBébé customers find the most practical at this time of year.

In autumn, think in layers when dressing your baby!

  • For sleep: a bodysuit with a sleepsuit and a 0.5 TOG baby sleeping bag, at 25 degrees a sleepsuit is often not needed

  • During the day: the same outfit used for sleep is perfectly suitable

  • For outdoors: at 5 degrees, add a footmuff over the bodysuit and sleepsuit, plus a hat, and in milder weather use a 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag instead of a footmuff

What room temperature is ideal for your newborn baby?

Professional recommendations suggest 22–25 degrees. Newborns need a slightly warmer room temperature because they are not yet able to regulate their own body temperature. 22–25 degrees is considered safe for them, helping to prevent them from getting too cold or overheating.

How should you dress your baby at a room temperature of 22–25 degrees?

A newborn still spends most of the day at home and often asleep. In the first few weeks, they move very little, so their body does not produce as much heat as that of an older baby. As a general rule, dress your baby in one more layer than you feel comfortable wearing yourself.

For example, if you feel comfortable in a long-sleeved top, your baby should be wearing a bodysuit and a sleepsuit. If the temperature in the home stays steady through the night, then up to around 24 degrees LiaaBébé recommends a bodysuit and sleepsuit for your baby, completed with a baby sleeping bag. At a room temperature of 25 degrees, a bodysuit on its own is often enough under a baby sleeping bag or baby blanket.

What should you look for when choosing clothes?

The material should be soft and flexible, so dressing your baby is nice and easy. High-quality temperature-regulating fabrics do a great deal to help make sure your child’s body does not get too cold or too warm.

These are the basic clothing items you may need

  • Choose short-sleeved or long-sleeved bodysuits in lovely cheerful colours, with cute floral or animal prints, or in plain shades, made from extra-stretchy bamboo fibre. These little outfits are especially lovely because they are close-fitting. They hold their shape, feel soft and are easy to put on.

  • Our sleepsuits are especially comfortable pieces and firm favourites with mums. Each one fastens with a zip, making them very easy to put on, even in the half-light during the night.

  • If you would like to use a baby sleeping bag, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. In a suitably roomy and flexible sleeping bag, your baby can rest comfortably. If the neckline fits nicely to your baby’s body, it can be worn safely without slipping down. Easy removal matters here as well, as your little one is often asleep during night-time nappy changes. We wanted to focus on these essential features, which is why you can find the ideal sleeping bag for your baby with us.

  • Like our sleeping bags, LiaaBébé bamboo baby blankets also come with a TOG rating. If you prefer using a blanket for your baby, then 0.5 TOG will be the right choice for you, made from two layers of bamboo viscose.

If you are expecting your baby in October, you will also need a few little pairs of socks, a hat for your baby’s head, especially after bath time and a warmer one for walks, as well as a lighter and a thicker baby blanket.

How should you head out from home?

Autumn walks with your baby will be wonderful. If you dress your baby properly and bring a few extra layers with you, there is no need to worry about the cold. Over a long-sleeved bodysuit and sleepsuit, add a little jacket and a thicker blanket or a suitably warm footmuff. A 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag can also be a good option, with an extra blanket on top if needed. The little hat should be warm.

If you head out around midday, the sun may be shining and pleasantly warm, and the temperature can reach 14–16 degrees. A bodysuit and sleepsuit combination will also be comfortable with a 2.5 TOG baby sleeping bag. In October, temperatures and weather can be quite changeable. During the day it may be around 9–11 degrees, and you also need to think about sunshine, wind and rain. With newborn babies, always go by the temperature at the time you are leaving the house.

What does the TOG rating mean?

TOG is a unit that indicates the thickness of the fabric . It shows how well the baby clothing keeps your child warm. The higher the TOG value, the warmer the sleeping bag or baby blanket.

A quick guide:

  • 0.5 TOG 22–25 degrees

  • 1.5 TOG 20–23 degrees

  • 2.5 TOG 18–21 degrees

Why are zip-up baby clothes so practical?

You may not even realise just how much easier a zip-up sleepsuit can make dressing your baby. Night-time nappy changes and outfit changes around feeding are much simpler in the half-light if the outfit can be opened from the neck right down to the feet with a zip.

In October, it is quite common for a baby to fall asleep in the pram and then need to be changed quickly once you get back indoors. In moments like these, a zip-up sleepsuit is a huge help because it does not disturb your baby while they are sleeping. It is these little but practical details that make LiaaBébé sleepsuits such favourites with mums during the autumn months.

Why is bamboo such a good choice in autumn?

If we look at the benefits of bamboo from a temperature point of view, the most important one to highlight is clearly its temperature-regulating ability. It keeps your little one warm in winter so their body does not get cold, and cool in summer, helping to protect them from overheating. It also absorbs moisture very well and is wonderfully breathable, which means your baby’s skin stays dry and does not become clammy. This matters because rashes often tend to appear on warm, damp skin.
